You should not be taking in any more than 2,300 mg of salt daily. If you already have risk factors associated with heart disease you should not be taking in more than 1,500 mg of salt daily. You need to pay attention to packaged foods which are almost always high in salt. Fast food is also very high in fat. Just one burger can exceed your salt for the day.
Now don’t go crazy and cut salt completely out of your diet, because a new study indicates a salt free diet can actually increase your risk of having a heart attack. “Slightly more than 6 percent of the participants had a heart attack, stroke, or other cardiovascular emergency during the study, roughly one-third of which were fatal. Those who consumed the least salt had a 56 percent higher risk of death from a heart attack or stroke compared with those who had the highest consumption, even after controlling for obesity, cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, and other risk factors. “ You can read the full results of the study at CNN.
Reduce Your Sugar Intake
For years we didn’t see sugar as a problem when it came to heart health. Yet recent studies have shown this is not so. Sugar intake negatively affects your heart health. So in addition to making you overweight or obese it makes your heart sick.
This really isn’t news as you can see from the study: “Yudkin and colleagues in the 1960sand 1970sfound that a higher intake of sugar was associated with increased CVD in both within-country and cross-country comparisons.”
A number of studies link dietary sugar with adverse changes in lipoproteins. Several studies have shown an inverse association between dietary sucrose and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. Data from the Coronary Artery Risk Development In young Adults (CARDIA) study show a consistent inverse association between increased dietary sucrose intake and HDL cholesterol concentrations.
